“Surely a Pretty Woman Never Looks Prettier Than When Making Tea”

This is one of the quotes that can been seen on the walls of Casa Angelina. One of the many hints of character in this quaint and delicate tea shop.

I have been visiting The UK for about 3 years now and have always longed to experience afternoon tea. So engrained in the culture, afternoon tea with sweets and savouries looked like such a fun afternoon spent. Unfortunately for me, and all other vegans, most spots that serve afternoon tea do not serve a vegan version.

In my search to find a vegan afternoon tea spot (I knew it HAD to exist somewhere!), I stumbled across Casa Angelina and am so happy that I did. This tea room blew. me. away. I really had no expectations, as I have never experienced afternoon tea before; however, it turned out to be everything I hoped it would be and more.

Casa Angelina is bursting with character. There are endearing quotes lining the walls and decor to make you feel right at home. The tea room is cozy, with a few tables in the back room and unique props surrounding the space. wpid-2015-09-29-01.19.29-2.jpg.jpeg

There is no set menu at this tea room. I repeat: there is no set menu at this tea room. That said, this actually makes each visit completely unique and exciting. Marie Claire, owner and chef extraordinaire at Casa Angelina, makes absolutely everything from scratch. Because she bakes each item fresh, she does ask that anybody coming in for afternoon tea provides her with at least least 24 hours notice.  Not all menu options are vegan, so this allows Marie Claire to bake up an incredible array of sweets and savouries for you, similar to what I devoured.  Also important to mention is that Casa Angelina offers a completely gluten free afternoon tea. YES! wpid-2015-09-25-06.53.24-1.jpg.jpeg

The food and beverages:

Every little detail of the afternoon tea experience is thought out and carefully executed by Marie Claire. Starting with the tea options; Casa Angelina has a variety of teas, which can be found on their menu here. There is a choice of soy milk or almond milk to accompany the tea and there is even vegan butter and jam to accompany the most incredible scones I have ever tasted.  The amount of food brought on the platter was enough to leave 2 people feeling pleasantly and contently replete. The bottom layer of the 3 tiered platter was savouries; a variety of samosas, sandwiches, falafels and more. As we worked our way up, we devoured the sweets; chocolate raspberry cake, fig cake, carrot cake and more. Finally, the scones. Warm and fresh, I topped mine with vegan butter and I was in heaven. wpid-201510132034156658.jpg

High tea costs £21 per person.

Final Thoughts:

This is one of our favorite spots in Edinburgh. Truth be told, it was very hard to figure out why Casa Angelina did not deserve a perfect review. We left with full bellies, happy hearts, and great memories.
